Whenever possible, an interview should be conducted in a noncustodial environment, one in which the suspect agrees to a voluntary interview. Look at the file in the course content and read the section on how Hanns Scharff and Sherwood Moran interrogated prisoners. Do you agree with their methods? How does it differ from Reid's nine steps? Discuss as you answer the following questions:

1. What are some ways an investigator might approach a suspect to get them to agree to a noncustodial interview?
2. In preparing for an interview there are certain steps the investigator should take. Explain what they are and why they are important.
3. During the course of the interview, what are some of the non-verbal cues that the investigator should be aware of and note?
