Where do we find supervisors and managers? Everywhere! These positions are present in small businesses (e.g. Main Street Bakery, Columbia), state government agencies (e.g. South Carolina Higher Education Tuition Grants Commission), federal government agencies (e.g. US Department of Homeland Security), and even non-profit organizations (e.g. YMCA of Sumter). We begin our semester exploring the basics of management, who managers are and the 4 functions (tasks) supervisors and managers are responsible for: planning, organizing, leading, and controlling. Some of you may have studied these essential tasks in other business-related courses. As the class takes shape, we will revisit each function in detail. As you read and review all weekly resources, pay attention to the 4 management.
- Based on what you have learned about the 4 functions approach to management, which function do you believe most supervisors need help with? Why do you think this is the case? Consider using a real-world example to support your opinion(s).
- What options are available to help managers/supervisors perform the function (task) better?
