C The aim of this study is to test whether smoking is associated with higher risk CVD. The study examines the presence of cigarette smoking related cardiovascular disease (CVD) in 164 pairs of identical twins of which one co-twin never smoked, while the other co-twin is a regular smoker. Recall that the co-twin control design includes pair matching for sex, age, and genetic factors, while matching for confounding environmental factors such as diet and early exposure to second- hand smoke. The study found: for 40 twin pairs, the the smoker co-twin had CVD while the non-smoker twin did not; for 23 twin pairs the non-smoker twin had CVD while the smoker co-twin did not. The remaining 101 pairs the twins had same status: For 15 pairs in which both co-twins smoked, all had CVD; the 86 pairs of non- smoker twin pairs did not have CVD.
