CASE 28 FIRST Cash FINANCIAL SERVICES: PAYDAY LOANS AND RETURN First Cash Financial Services, Inc. is a company that operates pawn shops in the United States and Mexico and also offers payday loans. Pawn shops allow customers to pawn personal items such as jewelry or electronics and get cash loans. They can then retrieve the items by paying back the loan with interest. Payday loans allow customers to get cash advances against paychecks, again by paying interest. Payday lenders have come under attack because of the high interest rates they charge. For example, a payday lender might charge $15 for a two-week $100 advance loan. This would result in an interest charge of $390 per year for a $100 loan, or an interest rate of 3,900 percent! Payday lenders also are attacked for failing to fully disclose the interest they charge. But the $15 fee may not sound like much to someone who really needs the money. Others support payday lenders. Some consumers might not have sufficient credit history to give them access to conventional forms of credit. Other consumers might be suspicious of other, more conventional lending financial institutions. Proponents of payday loans and pawn shops argue these are better alternatives than dealing with loan sharks who can introduce criminality and violence into lending.
