As she stands there, Amy, a mechanic at the dealership, drives a car belonging to a customer out of a maintenance bay toward a parking space. Amy is momentarily confused by the manual transmission and accidentally puts the car in the wrong gear, causing it to leap forward and strike Alyssa. Alyssa suffers two broken legs and a broken spine; her physicians believe she will never walk again. The customer to whom the car belongs, David, is waiting in the lobby for his repairs to be finished when he watches Alyssa get run down by his car. David runs outside to assist but trips over a container of gas that Michael, a salesman, has left outside when he fills up a new car that had arrived that day. The trip and fall is relatively minor, but the gas can spills, pooling gasoline around David. When David gets up, his steel-toed boots, whose leather was damaged, exposing the metal, scrapes the asphalt, creating sparks, which ignite the gasoline and cause the gas container to explode. David is badly burned and spends significant time home from work as he recovers.
