Why were "Streetcar Suburbs" formed? As the cost of living rose in cities, the poor were forced to move out, instead moving to new "suburban" areas. Factories began to be built closer to cities, so residents moved to "suburban" areas. Since transportation was faster, those who were financially able moved out of inner cities, living in new "suburban" areas. It was more effective than the bus system that had been used previously.
