Counseling and Crisis Intervention information

School counselors and counselors recognize the need for all students to attend school in a safe, orderly, and caring environment. To promote this environment, comprehensive school counseling programs should include anti-bullying/harassment and violence-prevention programs and comprehensive conflict-resolution programs to foster a positive school climate. Prevention programs increase the opportunity for improved academic achievement, appropriate behavior, positive relationships, successful resolution of conflicts, a safe school climate, and increased attendance. Participating in prevention activities empowers and encourages students to take responsibility for their behavior and their school and community environment.

Directions:

This paper will look at ways to provide bullying prevention supports to American Indian/Alaska Native youth. The approach will be specific to indigenous youth, and the prevention methods will be a cultural adaptation of an existing prevention program tailored to AI/AN youth. Currently, only some bullying prevention programs are noteworthy that are developed just for AI/AN people. Modifying evidence-based prevention programs incorporating culturally specific risk and protective factors can improve their usefulness for AI/AN clients. It is proposed that community settings adjust schedules to meet their youths' unique needs to be successful, particularly with diverse cultures. You will write about how you would incorporate a current prevention program and the Sweetgrass method as the delivery approach for AI/AN youth.
