The criminal justice system is a critical component of Canadian society as it helps to protect our rights and freedoms as individuals set out in the Charter, however, it can also become a double-edged sword if left uncheckedultimately limiting these same rights and freedoms that it is designed to protect. As a result, measures for assessing the effectiveness of the criminal justice system are important in ensuring that it is as fair and objective as possible. Griffiths discusses seven evaluating factors and I believe that the three most valuable for assessing overall effectiveness are how well the system treats everyone fairly without prejudice, whether or not there is public confidence and trust in the system, as well as the extent to which the system acts as a deterrent (Griffiths, 2019).

A criminal justice system cannot be considered fair and objective if its policies and actors are biased in how they treat each person coming into contact with it. What this means is that if those working within the criminal justice system are prejudiced againstfor examplepeople from different backgrounds, they may risk letting their bias impede their ability to be objective, resulting in an unfair trial, conviction, etc. While the criminal justice system is supposed to be free from prejudice, the overrepresentation of Indigenous peoples and other racialized groups within prisons helps paint a vastly different picture. Just recently, a wave of protests emerged across North America following the murder of George Floyd and although this was unfortunately not an isolated incident, it helped to raise awareness of what happens when criminal justice system actors let their personal biases influence their workultimately highlighting the importance of the system treating everyone fairly without prejudice. Another valuable factor for assessing the effectiveness of the criminal justice system is determining whether or not there is public confidence and trust in the system seeing as if those who rely on the system to keep them safe and protect their rights/freedoms do not trust it to do so, who are they to trust? While data on crime control, arrest rates, etc., may reveal a system that is functioning effectively, if these statistics are not considered alongside public opinion, they are essentially useless as public opinion holds much weight and may often tell a different story. As mentioned previously, the criminal justice system risks becoming a double-edged sword if left unchecked and therefore, public opinion is essential for determining whether or not there is public trust and confidence in the system. If it is found that the general public holds negative attitudes towards the system, changes must then be made accordingly to ensure that it is working to serve every single person equally. If criminal justice systems do not respond to concerns made by the public, they risk the slippery slope of eventual dictatorship and therefore, having an established sense of public confidence and trust is a key indicator of an effective system. The last factor that I believe is particularly valuable for assessing the effectiveness is the extent to which the criminal justice system acts as a deterrent seeing as this is one of its intended purposes. While these systems must be fair in convicting an individual of a crime, they cannot be too lenient as this will send the wrong messageinadvertently encouraging others to commit the crime. If crime rates are high in a particular jurisdiction, this can likely be attributed to the failure of their criminal justice system and therefore, it is important that this system acts as a deterrent to reduce these rates.

In terms of factors or indicators that Griffiths did not include that I believe to be important for assessing the effectiveness of the system, one would be how well the system is able to rehabilitate offenders seeing as if they are not given opportunities for rehabilitation, they are likely to reoffendreducing the overall effectiveness of the system. Furthermore, I also believe that a system's effectiveness can be measured in how it responds to public opinion given that if the majority of people believe there is a problem with the system (e.g., Black Lives Matter protests), it is critical that changes are made accordingly and within a timely manner. Griffiths' list includes seven key factors for measuring effectiveness and while I discussed the factors I believed to be the most significant above, I do not believe that any of the other factors are insignificant by any means as they are all necessary measures in their own way. Each of the factors helps to ensure that the criminal justice system is as fair and objective as possibletherefore, constant reviews of these systems using these criteria can ensure that it is working to serve and protect everyone equally as well as fulfilling its stated objectives.
