With the pandemic maybe winding down, you make one more attempt at building physics equipment in your house. This time you decide to build a cloud chamber (it's actually not that difficult according to youtube). Rather than waiting for cosmic rays to provide ionising radiation, you take apart a smoke detector and use the Americium 241 contained inside (don't do this). You know that Am undergoes radioactive decay by emitting an o particle with kinetic energy 5.5 MeV. Remember that an alpha particle has a mass of 6.6447x102 kg and a positive charge of 2e. o particles from the source move through a region of space with a uniform magnetic field at a direction perpendicular to the beam direction. Some protons from the cosmic rays with exacty the same velocity as the a particles are also seen to enter the cloud chamber. When these charged particles move through the cloud chamber a trail of condensation is seen along the path the particles take. Several different condensation trails are shown in the figure. The magnetic field points into the page. A B D Which path represents the path of a proton? O path A O path B O path C O path D Which path represents the path of an a particle? O path A O path B O path C O path D
