with three levels of the first independent variable (Global communication, Detailed communication, Both) and 5 levels of the second independent variable (1 through 5 representing different types of messages to be relayed) - 2 3 x 3 Between-Subjects ANOVA design. The Lab Experience: The written responses/messages produced by the receivers' are scored for accuracy. The raw data for the class is then compiled to provide a data set from which to evaluate the results. Your discussion in lab will follow a typical laboratory experimental report based on this demonstration. Lab Submission: Your assignment will be to discuss the components of a laboratory experimental report based on this demonstration including the following components: a) Introduction outlining the basic issue of nonverbal communication, and providing a purpose for our experiment and hypotheses with respect to what is expected to be found, based on our knowledge of the literature b) Next, the methodology including the subjects, materials and procedure is to be described. In the Methods section, provide the subjects, materials and procedure sections. Data Analysis which will briefly outline the descriptive and inferential statistical findings (these will be discussed with your LDs who will help you understand these statistics during the lab session covering analysis for your lab )- c) For the Results section, take time to describe the results broadly by comparing the three groups (i.e., gross communication - gestural, detailed communication - fine motor, both) relative to each other and as a function of Type of Message (i.e., the 5 scenarios). How accurate were the responses as a function of the type of communication permitted (was there an advantage for any particular type of communication?) and as a function of the type of message being portrayed (were some types of message/scenario easier/more clearly represented than others?). Provide a table of the means and standard deviations of the results, and graph them in a figure. Describe the inferential findings (your TAs will help you with this during the lab session covering analysis for your lab). d) Discussion , you will collectively discuss these findings from the results (do NOT repeat the results per se) in light of your original hypotheses and the literature on language/communication (refer to the readings provided and your textbook, lecture notes, lab outline). Be clear as to which source you are referring during the discussion in lab (and would reference accordingly in a written assignment). What were the challenges/limitations/strengths of communicating information in such a constrained manner (i.e. no words)? What is the advantage of verbal speech? What would be the disadvantage of verbal speech in the absence of expressiononverbal indicators? How do we compare to non-primatesonhuman primates
