With your help, Leonard did such a good job that he decided to give up his career in physics
and pursue design. Talking with his friends about the difficulties they face when identifying
differential equations, they decided to create a differential equation scanner app. Since this was
an application for smartphones, Leonard did a bit of research about designing mobile
applications and came across the term thumb zone, which Hoober defines as the most
comfortable area for touch with one-handed use. Trying to make their app
thumb-friendly, he set up a personalization system that collects user data and automatically
sorts the bottom menu bar (or UI Buttons as he calls them) based on the most frequently used
options on the menu.
For example, assume the original order of buttons on the screen are Scan,Upload,Copy,
More. As Howard uses the app, the app collects Howards data and identifies that Upload
and Copy are used more than the rest of the options. Therefore, the app changes the order of
the buttons accordingly, putting Upload and Copy where it is easier to reach by thumb. This
personalization is not limited to the testing period, and continues to collect buttons usage data
and reordering the buttons based on frequency of use when actual users will be using them as
well (hence the personalization).
2. Leonard goes on and uses AI models to see if his creative way of personalization would align
with design principles and usability aspects. Ask ChatGPT (or any other AI model you prefer,
but mention them as the source) whether this method of personalization of the items on the
screen explained above is a good idea. Then provide Leonard with your own rationale whether
ChatGPTs explanation is correct or not. Try to draw upon the usability aspects and design
principles you learned in this course.
