Within an orthodontic practice that I work in, insufficient patient care and poor time management are the most significant issues in the office. Beginning with the receptionists, scheduling appointments can be significantly challenging when students are penalized for missing classes, even for doctor appointments. Parents are irritated by how the receptionists speak to them; being rude and hanging up on them will make them even angrier. The receptionists need to be educated on how to speak with patients and parents to resolve any issues efficiently and civilly.

Within any healthcare organization, the number one priority must be patient care. Part of my job is to educate the community about the importance of proper oral care to improve their oral hygiene. This will enhance the patient's health and prevent us from terminating their orthodontic treatment due to non-compliance. Moreover, the dental professional should ensure that the patient is treated respectfully and not made to feel embarrassed about their oral hygiene.

The office needs to focus more on their time management skills due to overbooking, a lack of staff, and doctors prioritizing trivial things rather than seeing their patients. The office needs to ensure that it adequately books patients for the appropriate time. For each patient to receive the time they deserve, doctors and their staff must stay on schedule. Furthermore, this will reduce the amount of work that needs to be performed by myself and other doctors resulting in less burnout.

One of the biggest impediments I have when attempting to implement this plan is that the practice owners need to prioritize patient care; their priority right now is getting paid and having the patient look half-decent when the treatment is finished. One of the doctors truly does not enjoy being a dentist and therefore has an abysmal work ethic. Whenever I broach the subject of change in the office, the doctor gets annoyed and angry at me and is not open to hearing what I have to say. When I attempted to speak with the doctor, who is more rational, he listened to me and said that I brought up valid points, but he had to discuss everything with his partner, which led to a dead end.
