Within the disabilities community, there is an understanding that language has power. In fact, numerous agencies work tirelessly to reduce stigma and correct the language used pertaining to those persons(s) who have a disability. They ascribe to the idea that language can lead to expectation which can lead to a self-fulfilling prophecy for individuals. This is related to Labeling Theory and what is considered to be a "self-fulfilling prophecy" (Shifrer, 2013). People from conceptions about "disability" or "being disabled" early in life (Link & Phelan, 2001), thus led to a preconceived notion or stigma surrounding being labeled as disabled. What is your understanding of Labeling Theory as it pertains to person/persons with disabilities? In what other fields of social work practice could Labeling Theory and self-fulfilling prophecy become problematic?
