Working in a retail store does not pay well. Most employees earn minimum wages or slightly higher and many jobs come with no benefits and no training. Turnover is quite high. To combat turnover, managers at Bombay Co. Home Furnishings chain hold «Take Five» sessions with each sales staff member twice daily to discuss performance and goals. Assistant store managers also keep a «brag book». In these they record employees’ achievements. At Staples, there are rally meetings each morning before the store opens to try to motivate employees and discuss performance.
