WORLD VIEW Imported Wine Squeezing U.S. Vintners American consumers are sipping increasing quantities of Italian and French wines. In 2018 U.S. wine consumption barely inched up to 348 million cases, an increase of less than 1 percent. Imports accounted for 23.7 percent of that total consumption, up 1.7 percent from 2017. That increasing import competition is keeping wine prices low and encouraging domestic vinters to convert their vineyards into almond or avocado farms.
