Write a short laboratory report on your findings of the test. The report should be presented professionally. Provide introduction, relevant calculation(s) and or graph(s), discussion of the results and conclusion. Discuss the characteristics of the soil based on the results.
Laboratory/Workshop Sessions Compaction Test Introduction Compaction of soil is measured in terms of its dry density and moisture content. It is intended to reduce the air voids from the soil and is commonly performed by mechanical ways such as rolling, ramming, or vibration. This laboratory compaction test uses Proctor test method. The Australian Standard relevant to this test is AS1289.5.1.1:2017. Objective: To plot a graph of dry density vs water content and determine the optimum water content for compaction based on laboratory test data. To analyse data, draw appropriate conclusion and communicate the findings in the form of laboratory report. Task: 1. Read Chapter 4 of the textbook and AS1289.5.1.1:2017 2. Watch the Compaction test video available on Learnline prior to the lab class held at HiQA Geotechnical* 3. List the material and equipment used in the test and write down the test procedure at HiQA. 4. Students to work in pairs to determine the wet density of a compacted sample by measuring the volume and empty mass of the mould, compacting the sample in layers, blading off, then measure wet mass and determine the wet density, and sample for moisture content. 5. Plot the graph of dry density vs water content; then, determine the optimum water content for compaction of the soil sample. In the same plot, draw the zero air void curve assuming the specific gravity of soil is 2.69. (Volume of the Proctor mould is 1000 cm) 6. Write a short laboratory report (no more than two A4 pages) on your findings of the test. The report should be presented professionally (NO hand-written report, please!). Provide introduction, relevant calculation(s) and or graph(s), discussion of the results and conclusion. Discuss the characteristics of the soil based on the results. 7. Submit your report in .pdf format by the due date on Learnline.
