Excel Template:

Using Yahoo Finance, enter the stock ticker symbol to retrieve a plethora of financial information about the company. Your goal is to analyze the company using a series of financial ratios and charts contained within the Excel template posted on Canvas.

Data Gathering Worksheet: Using Yahoo Finance (go to the Financials link), retrieve the companys recent income statement and balance sheet information. Using the income statement and balance sheet information for the most recent four years, enter the data requested into the Excel template provided on Canvas.

Overview & Ratios Worksheet: Using the Excel template, calculate the firms current and historical ratios (a minimum of four years of history is required). Once you have calculated those ratios for the four years, indicate whether the ratio is upward trending, downward trending, fluctuating, or steady. Hint: use the PowerPoint presentation included in this weeks resources that fully defines each ratio to support your analysis.

Key Indicator Charts Worksheet:

Use the series of eight key indicators to chart the companys performance over the most recent four years. Use cell references to the Overview & Ratios worksheet to transfer the ratios to this worksheet. Then, insert a chart for each ratio that best presents the data.

Competitors Worksheet:

Choose one of the competitors you identified in 2b. Compare your companys most recent year of performance to this competitors matching year by:Choosing at least one ratio from each of the following categories:

Profitability

Liquidity

Long-Term Solvency

Equity

Choosing at least five ratios overall (i.e., at least one ratio from each category plus at least one more from any category you want).

Calculate the five key ratios you chose for the most recent matching year for that one competitor.

PowerPoint Presentation Part 2:

Discuss how your companys five ratios compare to that of the competitor. Which company is performing better based on each ratio? Are the companies closely matched in any of the ratios? Are there large variances between the companies in any of the ratios? Do any of the ratios suggest cause for concern for one or both companies? What else do you notice when comparing these ratios?

PowerPoint Presentation Part 3:

Assume your wealthy uncle gifts you $10,000 to start an investment account. Decide whether you would invest in this company. As an amateur investor, what does or does not attract you to this company? Would you invest your money in this company? Why or why not? Use your ratio analysis as well as your company and industry analysis to support your decision.
