Sarah Gray 23 hours ago DB3 Overall Rating XXXX Why is it necessary to convert raw scores into standard scores in testing? Scores reflect the performance of the individual taking an assessment instrument, and having a clear understanding of scores and their meaning is essential. Raw scores need to be converted into standard scores in testing, because a raw score is simply representing the number correctly answered questions coded in some specific manner. By itself, a raw score does not convey any meaning. A score has meaning only when there is some standard with which to compare it to. Part of the process to understand scores is transforming a raw score into some meaningful form. In most cases, scores can be divided into two general classes: norm-referenced scores and criterion-referenced scores. Norm-referenced scores involve an individual's test score compared to the test scores of other people who took the same test. Norm-referenced involves an individual's score being measured against a specified level of performance. References Drummond, R. J., & Jones, K. D. (2008).
