Erin Auer 1 day ago DB Mod 5 There are different types of learning and memory processes involved in tasks throughout life and they vary with age. Recalling your wedding day would involve recalling an old episodic memory. That memory would tend to not decline much in old age because it is a well-formed episodic memory. Remembering items on a shopping list involves working memory which does decline with old age. I know I already have a hard time remembering items on a grocery list and I must have them added to a physical list to remember everything. Remembering how to make coffee is a well-learned skill which doesn't typically decline with aging. My husband makes the best coffee ever and I am glad to learn it is not likely he will forget this skill! Learning the name of a new friend is acquiring semantic information and that does tend to decline with old age. Learning how to program a DVD player involves learning a new skill which also declines with old age. Older adults could help delay the decline in the areas mentioned by several different things. While there is neuron loss even with healthy old age, it may be helpful to do mental exercises and have a wide social support network. I'm sure it is also important to take care of your body with exercise and healthy eating. Reply
