Lavetta Marshall Feb 28 8:04pm . From my life experiences, | have noticed that the behavior of youth who engage in stealing money or other items can often be influenced by a combination of both nature, including genetic predispositions, and nurture, including environmental influences. For instance, | once encountered a situation involving a nine-year-old student who happened to be the son of one of my neighbors. Our neighborhood was typically quiet, with working-class householdsa nice middle-class environment, one might say. However, we began experiencing a rash of daytime home break-ins. During one of our neighborhood meetings to address these concerns, it became apparent that the perpetrators seemed to possess intimate knowledge of how to break in, when to strike, what to take, and where to find valuables in the homes. . To our astonishment, the culprits included a group of grade school children, one of whom was my neighbor's son. He lived with his uncle, and it became clear that he, along with the other children, had been taught to befriend other children in the neighborhood. Under the guise of innocent playdates, they would gather information about valuables, family schedules, and other pertinent details. This manipulative tactic, instilled by the adults overseeing them, led the children to exhibit traits such as impulsivity, risk-taking behavior, and a predisposition toward aggression. ' This highlights how genetic factors, including neurobiological influences on brain development, and environmental factors, such as family dynamics and socialization, interact to shape criminal behavior in young people. On the other hand, | have also encountered students whose involvement in criminal activity stemmed primarily from environmental factors. One student, for instance, shared with me how his family's socioeconomic status, coupled with peer pressure and a lack of positive role models, led him into the gang and crime world as a means of survival. ' In fact, it is evident that both nature and nurture interact in complex ways to influence human behavior. Understanding these factors is crucial for developing effective interventions and support systems to address delinquent behavior and promote positive outcomes for youth. Dol : - 6
