The strip-mining articles won the paper a Pulitzer Prize for public service in 1967. In 1998, its reporters wrote about the widespread doctoring of air quality tests in the mines, which left hundreds of miners breathing dangerous levels of coal dust, leading to black lung disease. Though the studies are few in number, there some convincing evidence that children may indeed experience musical performance anxiety at least as early as sixth grade. Additionally, there is some evidence that gender may also play a role in a musician's experience of musical performance anxiety. Several studies have noted differences in the level of anxiety reported by men and women (Abel and Larkin, 1990; LeBlanc et al., 1997; Nagel, 1988; Widmer et al., 1997). In each case, females reported more performance anxiety than males. Other studies have noted physiological differences, with females experiencing higher heart rates (LeBlanc et al., 1997). In addition, men and women have shown different means for coping with musical performance anxiety. Wolfe (1990) found that women tended to use emotion-focused strategies, whereas men tended towards problem-focused strategies. The emotion-focused strategies were related to greater confidence and competence and less self-consciousness, distractibility and disruptive cognitive activity than the problem-focused strategies. The evidence seems to suggest the possibility of systematic differences between the genders on eh experience of musical performance anxiety.
