Wutung Border Issues and Challenges

Wutung is located in Sandaun Province at the border of Indonesia and Papua New Guinea. It is a village which has a total population of 600 people and in the very remotest part of Papua New Guinea. The only available government services in existence in the area is an airstrip, a run-down school.

Many illegal border crosser use the village and cross over into Indonesia without have proper government documents like passport. Many illegal activities like illegal activities such as the smuggling of guns, drugs and pornographic materials, and the exploitation of marine products, flora and fauna along PNG-Indonesia borders.

With the increase of gun smuggling and all other illegal activities taking place within the border area of Western Province, these issues are demanding the construction of new border post project to curtail the increasing law-and-order and the security threats at the border areas.

This project will see the construction of an office complex to house offices for border security agencies officers like customs, police, defence, immigration, National Agricultural Quarantine Inspection Authority (NAQIA), Department of Provincial Affairs and the Western Provincial Administration.

A hostel standard house consists of all first seven agencies to accommodate the respective officers to man and enforce their respective tasks to the traditional border crossers and other interest groups engaging businesses along the border areas.

There are other supplementary projects that will be included as one project are setting up of solar system to power the border posts and the staff houses, water system two big reservoirs pumped out of Weam River and the upgrading of road connectivity. These are considered as components of the New Border Post construction at Weam.
