Question 1] Find the CED strategy that you would suggest for each community (use data to support your advice)

Swan Lake 7 and Sandy Bay 5 First Nation are both located in the province of Manitoba. Both are Treaty One signatories and are roughly a two-hour drive (164 Km for Swan Lake 7 and 177.5 for Sandy Bay) away from the major Urban center Winnipeg. However, despite their similar distance from the major economic center, they have drastically different economic outcomes for their communities.

Even though the basic sector industry has not grown in Swan Lake, there has been an increase in non-basic jobs between 2006 - 2016. Using a base-theory analysis of what could have occurred between 2006 - 2010 was capital deepening with the amount of capital being employed increasing, making the current basic jobs more productive and allowing the non-basic sector to grow.

Sandy Bay 5 Analysis

The basic sector in Sandy Bay 5 has shrunk throughout 2006 - 2016 with the basic sector shirking from 30 jobs to 10 jobs. TEE dropped by a total of exactly 20 jobs suggesting that it has not had a huge impact on the non-basic sector, which may have occurred to capital deepening; however total amount of jobs in the community declined from 100 to 80. If the current trend were to continue and the basic sector would decline even more, there would only be 3 basic sectors left, and community employment could fall to just 27 jobs.

Swan Lake 7 Analysis
