You are a community service worker in a community organisation in your local area. Your organisation provides a range of services to the residents in a mix of mainly new public housing and low cost private and community housing rentals. One group of residents is asylum seekers waiting for the government to determine on their asylum protection application to remain in Australia. Your clients often seek help from your organisation with legal/ government forms and other issues. This means your organisation regularly needs to call on interpreters to assist your clients.

Your management committee have asked you to perform two tasks:

1. Produce a plan outlining the steps you would take prior to the development of a cultural competency policy for your organisation.

2. Produce a draft cultural competency policy and its accompanying cultural competency procedures.

3. Describe the issues staff need to be mindful of when working with interpreters and how staff and your organisation could address these.
