You are a part of a mental health team at a children's mental health agency. Your client, 10-years-old, has been diagnosed with depression by the psychiatrist. He hasn't left the house in over 5 months and hasn't attended school for about 4 months. Prior to this, he stopped spending time with his friends and playing with the children in the neighborhood. He used to enjoy cadets, but stopped attending because he doesn't like it anymore. He's been placed on a home school program by the school board; however, now avoids the teacher by hiding in his room. Recently, he started to throw temper tantrums, which present as screaming, cursing, and eventually, inconsolable crying. He has been prescribed fluoxetine (Prozac) as a method of treatment by the psychiatrist on your team. His parents have negative perspectives about both psychiatry and medication. They feel that doctors often overmedicate children, that there are better ways of treating depression, and they're actually not even sure that their son really has depression. They believe that he's "just acting out" and "being difficult". However, the family is hesitant to discuss their concerns with the psychiatrist and have disclosed to you that they actually haven't been compliant with the medication regime. In a session with you, they brought in an article about anti-depressants to explain their reasoning for not giving their child the prescribed medication. You informed them that you will review this article with your team and discuss it further with them. In a team meeting, you ask your team to help you problem solve your current situation.
