Question
You are a Team Leader in one of the prime IT companies of India Info Solutions and you have been working there for the last
You are a “Team Leader” in one of the prime IT companies of India “Info Solutions” and you have been working there for the last 10 years. You joined soon after completing your engineering degree from the “Fore College of Technology” about ten years back when you were only 22 years old. You have risen up the leader the hard way and have been completely loyal to the company and its growth, so to say. While you had a dream to join one of the top 5 MBA Institutes in the country after two years of work experience, you could not qualify despite your best efforts. This dream remained unfulfilled till 2019 when you found a very attractive “Executive Management Program” in a leading B-School in the same town where you are employed. You applied for it and clearly sailed through the entrance process. You are now about to complete the course and will soon be armed with a proper Management degree.
You are now at crossroads because while the Institute does not have a structured placement process, you are confident that you would easily be able to procure any job given your expertise in the field of “Cloud Computing”, which is in great demand. One of the top-notch MNCs has approached you with a placement proposal and they had preliminary discussions with you their offer includes re-location to Bangalore for two years to familiarize yourself with the company’s processes and to possibly come back, two – years hence, and set up their own Division in DELHI.
This is a company which is based in Silicon Valley and has a huge reputation named “Computing Inc.” and would definitely look good in the long run on your CV. In the meantime, you have sounded-off your superiors about the completion of your course as they had promised that they would consider a promotion to the rank of “Senior Manager” with an expected jump of salary between 30 to 50% of your present salary with higher responsibilities and a bigger team to manage. They are expected to meet you formally with an offer soon.
In your personal life, your spouse is also working in another IT company, and you have a baby girl of four months. You are fortunate that your parents who have both retired also stay with you.
You have now to make a decision on a possible promotion with a probable salary hike or an offer of a new job with relocation to Bangalore. You are clearly in a dilemma.
Draw out a negotiating strategy that should include salary negotiation as a component.
2.) You are a resident of “GURGAON ”, a relatively small township, an hour away from DELHI. This township has a large IT and Services presence in addition to several ancillary manufacturing and small-scale industries. It has always lived under the shadows of DELHI but now wants to emerge from that position as a separate entity and is also expecting a huge domestic airport to come up nearby soon. You are a Senior Corporate Executive, born and brought up in GURGAON, and have done your Schooling and engineering from there and management degree from DELHI. Not only have you played cricket at the Ranji level when you were in your twenties, in addition, you are an influential member of the GURGAON Cricket Association and also run a cricket coaching club at GURGAON. The “IPL-14 2021” is commencing in April 2021 where the existing 8 teams of IPL 2020 will be participating. You have always dreamt to own a team that can participate in IPL and which will be an important contribution to your hometown GURGAON. This will also enable you to bring GURGAON out of the shadows of DELHI. You are already well-settled and you have cricket upper-most in your mind and you do not wish to make any windfall profit out of creation of a team. However, you do not have sufficient funds to invest in the creation of the team. At best, you will be able to contribute about Rs.50 lakhs which has been your life-long savings. You are, however, in close touch with two large investors – one from Mumbai and one from GURGAON who are extremely trustworthy but wish to remain anonymous till the completion of the deal.
The BCCI is saddled with several allegations and numerous cases are pending before the Hon’ble Courts. However, you are convinced that the show must go on and that IPL 14 would be held on time next year. At this stage, you need all the resources and support to ensure the creation and selection of “GURGAON Crusaders”, on the lines of ‘Pittsburgh Steelers’ a football team in Pennsylvania. The process of selection goes through a huge amount of networking, paperwork, corporate and political support as also a final interview of the representing teams’ sole representative before the three-member committee consisting of the BCCI Chairman, past Chairman, and IPL Chairman. You have come to know informally that next year they are likely to add on one more team and at least 3 new teams including yours from the Northern region are likely to apply for the same. One of the potential teams is from the same town as the recently elected Chairman of IPL and who is also on the interviewing committee.
Please prepare to strategize, meet and negotiate with the three-member Committee as the sole representative of GURGAON Crusaders. The venue of this negotiation is DELHI.
