You are an EN working in a paediatric unit at the base hospital. Michael, an 8-year-old patient with Type 1 diabetes, is engaging in disruptive behaviour to other patients. On more than one occasion, you have lost your temper and had to stop yourself from slapping Michael. You feel very remorseful about this and realise that you need help controlling your anger and finding alternate ways to manage Michael's behaviour.

Later the same week, you observe another nurse giving chocolate to Michael to encourage him to change his behaviour. You are surprised, as Michael is still learning to manage his diabetes and his parents have requested that he not be given sweets. The other nurse laughs when you ask about this and says, 'I do a lot of things I am not supposed to do to make Michael behave'.

Although you understand the other nurse is just trying to manage a difficult situation, you do not think this approach is helping Michael manage his behaviour and creates more difficulty for others who do not offer bribes. You do not want to get your colleague into trouble and are unsure whether to intervene or just ignore the observations you have made.

Referring to the scenario above about the nurse giving chocolates to Michael, identify at least 4 VALUE STATEMENTS from the | ICN - International Council of Nurses that you would use to guide your actions. Please explain how you would use these to guide your actions in managing the situation.

For example:

ICN Statement 2.5 states Nurses maintain standards of personal conduct at all times. They reflect well on the profession and enhance its image and public confidence. In their professional role, nurses recognise and maintain personal relationship boundaries.

The nurse giving Michael chocolate as a bribe is conduct that does not reflect well and may impact on the parent's confidence in our ability to care for Michael. I will use this statement to guide my conduct to ensure it maintains an excellent public image, reflects well on our profession and maintains trust.
