You are an entomologist, and have collected a sample of a species of beetles (Statisticus succus) known for having one of two colorations on its thorax (red or green) from two different estuaries. A sample from each estuary was collected and the color of each beetles thorax, their size (length) have been recorded in centimeters (cm), and their mass (weight) has been recorded in grams (g).
The first sample was collected from estuary A, which has a known proportion of 28% red beetles to 72% green beetles. The second sample was collected from estuary B, which has a known proportion of 19.5% red beetles to 80.5% green beetles. You know from previous research that the average size (length) of the Statisticus succus beetle is 2.013centimeters and the average mass (weight) is 52.0 grams.
A very nice graduate student entered all of the information into SPSS that has been verified for accuracy. Use the data provided for the two samples to determine if the samples are indicative of the known proportion for each estuary.
- Determine if the observed proportion of red to green colored Statisticus succus beetles from both Estuary A and Estuary B (treated as one sample) is aligned with that of the known proportion.
