You are an investigator studying the effects of various drugs on the expression of key genes that regulate cell migration. It has been previously established, using very sample sizes, that the average expression level of the gene ABC in untreated (control) mice is 10 units. You treat a sample of mice with Drug X and measure the expression of the gene ABC following treatment. For a sample of five mice you observe the following expression values: ABC = {11.25, 10.5, 12, 11.75, 10}. You wish to determine whether the average expression of ABC in mice treated with the drug differs from control mice.
a. Report your hypothesis
b. Calculate your sample statistics and 95% confidence interval
c. Which test should you use on this data (z-, Student's t-, Welch's t, Mann-Whitney U, etc...)? How did you determine this?
d. Perform the appropriate test assuming that your data is normally distributed, and your variances are equal.
e. Interpret your results accordingly, including reporting a p value
