You are 'designing' the reporting line structure of a technical team which works on an oil well. The team consists of sixteen people who are either engineers or technicians. The CEO has told you that to limit administrative burdens; there should be at most eighteen 'reporting' links between these people. The environment is a high risk one and absence through injury or sickness is common. You have been told that the reporting network should be resilient to absence of individual employees as much as possible. In particular, you have been given the following constraints: A minimum of 75% of the team should be placed such that their absence does not affect the rest of the reporting network in any way (no employee present should be disconnected). No employee should be placed in such a way that their absence cuts-off more than 25% of the employees from the main network. a) State three reasons for modelling projects and business organizations as networks (graphs). (3 marks) b) A graph has 1475 nodes and 1726 links. What is the average degree of the graph? (You may use a calculator to compute the answer). (2 marks) c) Explain why a management structure which is modelled as a scale-free network is more resilient, given that the number of possible links is restricted. In your answer, consider the possible effects of absences, employees leaving, and the relative importance of each employee to the project team (4 marks) d) In the above scenario, ome up with a network of sixteen nodes and maximum eighteen links which satisfies both these criteria. (8 marks) e) Calculate the degree distribution of this network. Discuss the significance of this degree distribution. (8 marks)
