You are interviewing for a new, information systems position and the controller of company XYZ has asked that you develop a comprehensive DFD and flowchart for the cash receipts system as part of your interview process.
The controller provides you with the following narrative of the cash receipts system:
Customer payments are in the form of cash received at the time of purchase and payments received in the mail. At the end of each business day, the treasurer endorses the checks and prepares a deposit slip for the checks and cash. A clerk deposits the checks, cash, and deposit slip at the bank at the end of each business day. A remittance slip is included with payment when checks are received as payment for accounts due. The remittance slips are used to update the accounts receivable file at the end of the day and are stored in a file drawer, by date. A cash receipts report and an aged trial balance are prepared each week using the accounts receivable ledger. The cash receipts report is sent to the controller, while a copy of the aged trial balance is sent to the credit and collections department.
