You are required to carry out an initial scoping design of a fractionator processing an ideal mixture which is specified in Table 1 below. The column must be capable of processing 645 kmol/h of feed which is expected to arrive "on-tower" as a vapour-liquid mixture having a vapour fraction of 0.37 Table 1: Feed Composition and K; Values Mol% in Feed 10 30 35 15 10 Component A B C D E Predicted mean Ki value for design 1.19 1.12 0.98 0.83 0.79 The client has set the top product specifications as a vapour distillate containing i) at least 98.2 mol% of component B in the feed (see table 2 below), and, ii) a maximum contamination of component C in this stream of 2.4 mol % (see table 2 below). (a) Determine the approximate material balance for the separation. (9 marks) (b) Do the appropriate analysis to estimate, for the specified separation, i) The minimum number of ideal stages necessary. [2 marks] ii) The minimum enriching section vapour rate. [4 marks] iii) The number of ideal stages necessary, if the operating reflux ratio is 1.3 times the minimum value. [2 marks] 1 iv) The position of the feed-tray and the column configuration if all stages except the condenser, feed-plate and reboiler exhibit an efficiency of 75.5 %. [3 marks]
