A woman in a Toyota Corolla (combined mass of 1275 kg) was driving on West Broadway at night. She claims that a drunken guy suddenly crossed the road in front of her and so she slammed on the brakes. Unfortunately, she lost control of the vehicle and skidded into a concrete wall. There were no witnesses and the guy apparently took off.

The police report says that the front of her vehicle was impacted and compressed by 0.25 m and that the skid marks were 6.25 m long. The Corolla's technical manual explains that the friction force is approximately 10,200 N when the car is skidding. Upon impact, the force goes up to 255,000 N (road friction + wall impact), which is known from crash test measurements.

Now the insurance company claims that the women was driving recklessly over the speed limit and refuses to pay. You decide to use your Phys 100 knowledge to give your verdict.
