You are the Captain of a 121 passenger flight that is due to take off in 10 minutes. Everybody has boarded the flight, but the cabin and cockpit doors have not yet been closed, as your First Officer is still reviewing some aspects of the flight release before you can push back. The cabin crew are in the cabin doing their final walk through before pushback, checking on passengers and closing the overhead bins. During this check, the cabin crew notices that a passenger in first class is visibly irritated and is talking on a cell phone. One of the cabin crew (the lead flight attendant) politely requests for the passenger to finish their phone call, as the aircraft will not be able to takeoff until they are done talking and the cell phone is either off or in "airplane mode". The passenger, already irritated, demands that the cabin crewmember "mind their own business" before returning to their conversation. Again, the crewmember requests that the passenger ends their conversation, to which the passenger responds "Do you know who I am? I am (insert internet famous celebrity name here)" and continues with their phone conversation. At this point the crewmember warns the passenger that they may be removed from the flight if they (the passenger) do not comply with crew instructions, at which point the passenger begins to loudly belittle and insult the crewmember to whoever is on the other side of the phone conversation. The flight is now within minutes of being late, and it is obvious that other passengers are uncomfortable with the increasingly loud conversation that is happening between the crewmember and the passenger. Seeing that no progress is being made to the situation, the cabin crewmember then turns and heads to the cockpit to discuss the situation with the ultimate authority for the flight: you.

  • As the Captain, what is going to be your initial response to this incident?
  • What is going to be your ultimate solution to the incident?
  • What authority (including what regulations) do you have that allow you to do what you want to do to resolve this incident?
