You are the detective in charge of a homicide investigation. The victim's body was found in a wooded area west of Levan and south of 5 Mile Road by a group of biology students from the local University. The victim is a 45-50 years old, white male, approximately 5 foot 10, and 165 pounds. He has thinning light brown hair and brown eyes. He has several tattoos on both shoulders (St. Michael on the right shoulder, Punisher on the left shoulder). The victim does not have any identification or a cell phone on him. The victim was shot 5 times in the upper chest.

  1. What evidence would you look for at the scene? You must have at least 5 different items.
  2. What information do you hope to learn from this evidence?  Example: If you found a glass sup at the scene, you would hope to find fingerprints or DNA on the glass that would lead you to a suspect.
  3. The identity of the victim is critical to your investigation. How would you go about trying to identify him? List at least three separate actions you could take.
  4. After processing the crime scene, what are your next steps in the investigation? Explain what you would do next, in order of priority, and why you would do it. You can assume that all of the evidence that was collected at the scene was turned over to the crime lab and you are awaiting the results.
