Here is the question:

Processing a Crime Scene

Proper evidence documentation of the crime scene is essential. How would you process the crime scene, from start to finish, using what you have learned in this unit?

Allison Melvin

Processing a crime scene correctly is essential if an investigator wishes to document evidence properly, and not miss any potential clues. Described as the 7 S's of crime scene investigation, the first step would be to secure the scene. This step ensure everyone is safe, and that areas are isolated so evidence can be preserved. The second S step is to Separate the Witnesses and the third S stands for Scan the Scene. This step allows investigators to determine where the crime took place, and if there are any secondary crime scenes that may contain evidence. The fourth S stand for See the Scene, meaning pictures of the scene are taken using evidence markers and rulers, to show the scale of objects found. The fifth S stand for Sketch the Scene, which is a sketched recreation of the crime scene. The sketch includes objects at the scene and the location of evidence. It also includes directional north, the date, time, location, and case number (Alabama State Department of Education, n.d.). The sixth S stands for Search for Evidence, which can occur in various patterns like grid or spiral, but it is up to the lead investigator to choose which may be best for the scene. The last S stand for Secure and Collect All Evidence. Each piece of evidence is logged in an evidence log and marked with an evidence label that shows chain of custody. Each person that touches the evidence must complete the chain of custody. This is required for the items to be admissible in a court of law (Alabama State Department of Education, n.d.).

From being the first person to arrive on scene, I would begin to secure the scene and checking any and all victims who may need first aid(Fisher & Fisher, 2022). Making sure to notify the medicolegal death investigator if anyone is found dead on scene(Fisher & Fisher, 2022). I would also immediately begin documenting times, and any important details(Fisher & Fisher, 2022). As well as my note-taking in chronological order(Fisher & Fisher, 2022). I would then begin to work with my team to ensure photographing of the scene, and sketching has begun, adding to both as new evidence is discovered(Fisher & Fisher, 2022). I would then continue with examining the crime scene, ensuring all evidence is photographed, collected, and documented properly(Fisher & Fisher, 2022). After I am sure all evidence on scene has been properly handled I am able to release the crime scene from my custody(Fisher & Fisher, 2022).
