Count out 50 pieces of candy and place them in a cup. Notice that each atom (candy) is marked on one side with an "M." These are the PARENT ATOMS. 2. Place 2 white sheets of paper on your desk to keep your candy sample clean. Label one "Decayed." 3. Place candy in the cup. Place your hand over the top of the cup and gently shake shake for 7.13 seconds (this represents 713 million years passing, the time to decay or one half-life). 4. Carefully pour the Candium atoms of M&M's onto the unmarked sheet of paper. 5. Separate the "M-up" and "M-down" atoms. 6. Push the "M-down" atoms onto the sheet of paper marked "Decayed" and leave them alone for now. You will use them again in future trials. These are really a new element: Greenium (DAUGHTER ATOMS). 7. Count the number of candies with the "M" side up. These are your undecayed (still radioactive) candy atoms. Record the number of undecayed ("M" side up) atoms in the data table under "1st half-life, trial 1." 8. Place only the undecayed ("M" side up) atoms back into the cup. 9. Repeat steps 3 - 8 until all the atoms in your sample decay (M-side down). Be sure to record the number of undecayed ("M side up) atoms in the data table under "shake (1 half-life), trial 1."10. After Trial 1 is completed, start Trial 2 using the same procedure as Trial 1. Be sure to record the number of undecayed ("M" side up) atoms in the data table each time you shake and pour. 11. Calculate and record the average number of undecayed ("M" side up) atoms left per shake in the data table. 12. CLEANUP: Return the cup and throw away used candies and the sheets of paper you used.
