You have been facilitating a psychoeducational group for the past 5 weeks at a local college. The group is on managing stress as a college student. Your group is about 8-10 members and about the same 5-7 people have been showing up for the group. One group member is an international student from South Korea. His name is Chung-Hee and is an engineer major (JR) and English is his second language, but he is fluent in speaking/writing English. He has lived in the US in the 3 years and stays with his "sponsors" in the US. He has attended all the group sessions, but never talks. Today for the first time he says to the group, "My girlfriend (American) has broken up with me. She said she couldn't handle how different I am from her family and she wasn't sure if she could continue seeing me. I am so embarrassed. I feel like a fool." Chung-Hee walks out of the group and refuses to return to the group even with the facilitator and some group members asking him to please return. He drives off and will not answer his phone. No one knows where he lives/resides.

  1. how would your understanding of cultural and diversity issues, and assess your own ability to be culturally competent?
  2. how can your group topic (healthy relationship) trigger different cultural responses and generate a range of experiences from the members of your group?
  3. how can the cultural difficulties one member may be having influence your group dynamic - both negatively (i.e. resulting in disagreement/conflict) and positively (resulting in broadening others' perspectives and normalizing the situation)?
  4. what you would do, and why, to address the scenario described above.
