  1. You have just graduated from Niagara College having successfully completed all the requirements of the school’s Human Resources program. You are overjoyed that a company in the region hires you as their new Human Resources Manager. As the new HR Manager, you are also responsible for the administration of the company's Occupational Health and Safety Program. The company is located in Welland and has 400 unionized employees. It manufactures generic “no-name” automotive parts for a host of domestic and foreign automobiles.

  2. You report to the CEO. One day, the Manager of Operations, Susan, walks into your office and presents you with the following scenario. One of the operations employees, Joe, has refused to work. Joe says that he was asked to work with a new chemical but has recently read that the chemical is very toxic and potentially carcinogenic. Joe has not had any training with respect to the handling of this chemical nor does he have any personal protective equipment such as a respirator to wear when handling this chemical. He is worried that working with the chemical is going to make him sick. Joe says that he is not going to work with this material until he is properly trained in how to use it safely. Joe also wants this issue reviewed by the company’s Joint Health and Safety Committee. Joe has also asked to see a Safety Data Sheet for this new chemical. The Operations Manager is very upset with Joe. Susan says that Joe is a troublemaker who is slowing down production in the plant. Susan says that her annual performance bonus is being threatened by Joe’s disruptive antics. The Operations Manager wants to fire Joe immediately and has come to you to discuss the process for his immediate termination.

  3. What advice do you give to the Operations Manager? Present your best recommendations to Susan.
