You have recently started started working at the front desk of a small family practice located in a very diverse area. Many of the local population are Sikh. When the clinical Medical Assistant takes her lunch, it is often up to you to bring the patients back to the exam room and get them ready for the provider.

Background: The Sikh religion originated in Northern India. Turbans and Kachera are worn at all times for religious reasons.

• Turbans or scarves cover uncut hair.
• If the turban or scarf must be removed, an alternative head covering must be provided.
• The turban or scarf should be respected. Ex: It would be disrespectful to put then on the floor or near shoes.
• Kachera are undershorts/undergarments. One leg must remain in the Kachera t all times.

You are a little nervous as you have never met someone who is Sikh before. The provider usually wants the patient to be undressed with a gown on and seated on the exam table.
