You may read about, but gloss over, the amount of money paid to high-profile football and basketball coaches at major Division | FBS schools. As an increasing number of coaches hit the salary range of $3 million to $4 million per year not to mention performance bonuses and built-in increases--many students, parents, and athletic program supporters are questioning the idea of paying such an exorbitant salary to a coach at what is purported to be a primarily academic institution. In 2013, FBS football coaches averaged $1.8 million annually, a 10 percent increase over the previous year. In fact, coaching salaries for big-time programs have increased 90 percent since 2006. Moreover, three coaches Nick Saban (Alabama), Mack Brown (Texas), and Bret Bielema (Arkansas) each earned more than $5 million in 2013 (USA Today 2012). In this environment, coaches' salaries dwarf not only the money paid to professors but even the salaries of college presidents.
