You take a new job as a staff internal auditor with a large retail company. At the same time you start your job, a new hire, Brenda (a graduate of UCF) also starts as a staff auditor with the same company. You start your first audit and Brenda tells you she believes that it is appropriate to obtain an understanding of internal controls about halfway through the audit after she is familiar with the clients operations and the way the system actually works. She believes that filling out internal control questionnaires and flowcharts early in the engagement is not beneficial because the system rarely functions the way it is supposed to. According to Brenda, then later in the engagement, the auditor can prepare flowcharts and questionnaires with relative ease because of the knowledge already obtained on the audit.
