You work for a large appliance manufacturer called TLC, Inc. You have been working at the corporate headquarters in Tucson, AZ for eight years. You started as an intern, turned it into a full-time job, and have been promoted twice since then. You love working for TLC, and feel that the company and the people who work there believe they add value to people's lives by offering affordable products. You just received a promotion and have moved to Smalltown, in the latin country of Stolivia, with your spouse and three young children. This is a very big promotion - it is the first time the company has made an investment in an overseas facility, and you are now the plant manager. After several weeks of on-location analysis, you realize that the reason companies are investing in the area is because the labor rates are so low. However, you also realize that in order to take advantage of the low labor rates, you have to offer very low pay and minimal or no benefits to the majority of the local laborers. The local community is desperately in need of the economic boost the new facility would bring. In looking at the cost of living in the area, you conclude that the average worker at the plant would barely live at subsistence level, and the lower-paid employees would be unable to pay for basic utilities. You cannot raise the pay rates without making the return on investment in the facility significantly lower than the current corporate required rate of return. You were given the promotion because several corporate officers believe in you. They have watched you for several years and sponsored you in your professional advancement.
