You work in the accounting department of a large energy company. As part of your duties you review spread sheets listing the liabilities carried by the various branches of the company. As you are reviewing these documents, it becomes clear to you that debt of the various business units has been buried with other companies so that it looks like the branches are profitable when in fact they are not. You have taken this information to your immediate supervisor, who advised you to keep your mouth shut about it if you value your job. You have also mentioned it to youre the vice-president of finance (your supervisors supervisor) and he seemed interested. He scheduled seven meetings with you over the past several months, but each time cancelled without explanation. You now have the sense that he is putting you off and just avoiding dealing with the problem. Given these facts would you expose the conduct of your employer? Please perform a full analysis indicating clearly any steps that you would take or consider in arriving at your decision, the reasons for taking the step, and indicating whether or not you have sufficient information to make a determination for each step. (18 marks) Would your answer be different if you worked for an outside auditing firm? If so why and if not, why not? (2 marks)
