Your department will soon be moving into newly renovated laboratory and office space on another floor in the building where you are currently located at New State Academic Medical Center. The building houses clinical and basic science research laboratories and offices for several academic departments and there is an outpatient clinical practice building next door. There is one parking lot directly between the two buildings. More than 2/3rds of the parking spaces in this lot are reserved for patients. The remaining spaces are assigned to faculty and clinic staff. There is a staff parking lot located 11/2 blocks from the building. The neighborhood deteriorates in the area where the remote parking lot is located. Your departments new space includes laboratories and an adjacent suite of offices. The office area consists of a suite with a partitioned open area for support staff and perimeter offices for researchers and administrators. The department chair spoke with you yesterday and told you that there are two remaining offices that have not been assigned. One office is 120 square feet with a window overlooking a pocket park across the street. The other office does not have a window and it is only 90 square feet. The second office is smaller because a portion of the floor space was used to construct a supply closet located just outside the office door. The department chair asked you to meet with another colleague, Colleague B, and work out which of the two offices each of you will take. You and Colleague B joined the department at the same time. You were both recruited about four years ago. Colleague B is pretty easygoing. S/he isnt one to make a fuss about things. You know that in a busy organization like this one, if you dont take care of yourself nobody else will. You managed to get your parking assignment changed from the lot down the street to the parking lot adjacent to the building. Recently you were able to persuade the departments office manager to purchase the newest office software package for you. You prefer the larger office. It has a view and the floor plan will nicely accommodate all of your furniture and computer equipment. When you are not seeing patients or working in your laboratory (which is small but has a window), it will be a welcoming retreat.
