Your group is a group of interns for an environmental engineer, Jerry Harris, who works for the National
Parks Service. Jerry has asked you to research the use of firebreaks to contain forest fires. He suggests that
you consider a model forest, a square that is fifty kilometers on each side, and that you use the calculus
technique of optimization to determine some advantages and disadvantages of using firebreaks in certain
configurations. Project 2(Firebreaks) at the end of Chapter 4 of your textbook describes two
configurations: (a) equally spaced horizontal strips, and (b) equally spaced grid. For each pattern, find the
optimum number of firebreaks as a function of the width b of each firebreak (note that the textbook only
explicitly says to do this for the horizontal strips, but Jerry Harris is asking for this to be done for both
patterns). You should choose an appropriate interval for b based on the scenario. Recommend the best
firebreak configuration. Jerry is going out of town for the week, but when he comes back he expects to
have a written report, containing your findings, on his desk.
