Your hospital is located in an established community that has changed little in the past $40$ years. Last month a critically ill elderly woman of Middle Eastern descent was admitted to the intensive care unit. She understood no English, and when the hospital offered a translator, the family refused and requested that all communication be handled through her English$-$speaking son. There was no power of attorney document permitting this. A large number of family members insisted on staying with the woman and presented difficulties for security and ICU staff, as well as being disruptive to other patients. When she died the next day, the security staff was called to remove the family members, creating quite a disturbance. In response to this, the hospital administrator asked the human resources director to prepare a diversity training program for all hospital employees.
