Your name is John Cabot and you are the new food and beverage manager for the Cole Hotel in Clinton. Cole Enterprises is a chain of nine medium-sized properties in the Midwest. Prior to assuming this position, you were the catering manager in another Cole property.
You have been directed to attend a special four-day management development program at corporate headquarters in Clinton. The program begins later this evening, but due to your excitement about the new position, you decide to stop by and see your new office.
It is 4 p.m. Sunday, June 11, and you find the attached items in your in-basket. You have only one hour to spend at the office, but decide you'd like to get started on some work.
What will you do?
INSTRUCTIONS:
- Read through all 14 of the items in your in-basket.
- In the left column of the chart on the following page, list the items in order of their importance (i.e., the item that requires the most immediate attention will be listed as "1," the next most pressing "2," etc.) In the column on the right, indicate WHY you placed the item in that order.

Mr. Henry Stevens
Food and Beverage Manager
Cole Hotel

Clinton, Oklahoma
Dear Mr. Stevens,
The Kenowa County High School Woodwind Ensemble has just completed its first year of rehearsing. We are now ready to perform in public. Since the Cole hotel is such a prominent part of our community, it seemd appropriate to seledt the hotel as an ideal place to perform.
Would it be possible to arrange for the ensemble to perform one night each week for a two-month period?
We would expect no remuneration for this, and I'm sure Local 27 of the American Federation of Musicians would approve.
Sincerely,
Fred Babcock

This is the third and final correspondence that this office plans to have with the Cole Hotel regarding the sanitation conditions in the kitchen. Mr. Abbott of our field service unit is available to make this inspection at any time prior to 5:00p.m. on Wednesday.
We regret the potential severity of our action, but you leave us no choice.
Very truly yours,

Dear Mr. Cabot,
Yesterday Harriet Yokely accused me of not punching my own time card. She said I was breaking a company rule and was being let go because of it. I've worked at Cole for seven years and I've had a perfect record until now. The only think I can figure is she's out to get me! I'd like to tell you my side of the story. I'll be happy to come in whenever you can see me.
Sincerely,
Jean Babcock

MEMORANDUM
TO: Mr. John Cabot
FROM: E. Daly, President
RE: Tuition Refund Plan
DATE:June 8, 200X
As you know, Cole has had a college tuition refund plan since 1978 for employees aspiring to management positions. Presently, 40 employees take advantage of this benefit. During the past two years, the company has been losing several of the employees enrolled in the program at graduation. Last year, for example, one-half of those receiving a degree left the company for other jobs. We seem to be paying out money for college-trained personnel, but other companies are receiving the benefit of our investment.
The Executive Committee will be addressing this problem at Tuesday night's meeting. Since you previously participated in this program, we wondered if you had any reactions.

Mr. Henry Stevens

Dear Mr. Stevens:
It has come to our attention that you list in your luncheon menu "Kosher Hotel Dogs." However, a recent visit to your kitchen has revealed that you have been using Western Brand All-Beef Hot Dogs, which are not certified Kosher. Your chef indicated that you have no desire to change brands.
Since the use of the word "Kosher" is guided by strict religious and secular law, it is imperative that you cease using your existing luncheon menus immediately.
Sincerely,

Dear Mr. Cabot:
I have been retained by Sally Fraser and wish to examine the basis for litigation on her behalf.
I hereby request the complete details on the firings of both Sally Fraser and Jean Babcock. Because they are minority employees, I believe that Harriet Yakeley's action is prejudicial and urge you to overrule her decision to terminate my client.
I must have your response by Tuesday morning or I will file charges with the Fair Labor Practices Bureau.
