The 1950s and the 60s were difficult for the society and families who were experiencing autism for the first time or were new to the idea. In a bid to understand the condition, the society laid a grip on every explanation that would come their way. Some of these explanations came from psychoanalytic such as Bettelheim and Mahler among many others. Bettelheim sold the people the idea that autism effects in infants could be modified through behavioral modification. He presented the idea of reading fairy tales to children in order to shape their personal view and that of the society (Schiller, 2020). Through this, Bettelheim believed that the unresponsive nature in which children born with autism possessed would pass away. The theories gave people hope and guided them on how they would be able to handle the situation. However, after a while, some of this theories were modified having been identified as ill informed.

Psychoanalytic and psychotherapeutic approach to autism has continued to be popular in today's society due to its possibility to ease some of the characteristics of the condition. Psychotherapeutic approach is able to engage the children masking them more adaptive and responsive. It also eliminates the desire for children to copy from adults around them which can possibly deny them the opportunity to exercise their mental and physical freedom as children. Therefore, psychoanalytic and psychotherapeutic approaches are geared and tailored in such a way that they center on the child, their behavior and also speech therapy. As a result, parents are rid of the emotional and physical burden that comes with raising an autistic child. Without this help, the process becomes tedious and helpless.
