Your second assignment is a community mapping project that represents vulnerability and capacity visually and conceptually. The purpose of this assignment is to increase your awareness of the vulnerable populations within your own community, what challenges they might face in a disaster, and how you would involve these groups at all stages of the emergency management process. Selecting a community to map: Ideally, use your own community. If you live in a large urban area you may need to confine your "map" to only a portion of your community. For example, if you live in the West End of Vancouver, limit your project to the West End, rather than the whole city. Working with just a few indicators of vulnerability, locate more than one source of information and collect some current data. Consider Stats Canada reports but also relevant data from government reports, social service agencies, or academic studies in this area. The project has three components: Conceptual or visual risk assessment map: Locate and edit an actual map, create a collage, a diagram, a slideshow, a video, etc. Whatever format you choose, you must clearly identify the community and the areas within it that reflect social vulnerability for consideration in the community emergency and security management. Integrate this as an Appendix to your written report. Report: In a brief written report, identify and discuss what sources of information you consulted to identify the contours of social vulnerability here, and provide examples of the indicators you used. The report should also reflect on the limitations of these data. How might you learn more about the capacities of high-risk population groups as well as their vulnerabilities? This is a short report so make careful choices about what examples to discuss that help you make your larger points, but the report should include each of the sections below. 1. Title page, which includes the title of your paper, your name, the course number, page number and the date. 2. Brief description of the community that clarifies why it was selected. What hazards are people here exposed to? 3. Description of the indicators you located that provide insight into the everyday living conditions of the people in this community. Include in-text citations to your sources, including when you cite Census data or published research. 4. Brief discussion of the implications of the social patterns you have identified in this particular community. How do they bear on overall vulnerability and/or resilience? What challenges might these groups face in a disaster, and how can they be involved at all stages of the emergency management process? 5. Conclusion, recapping the key points of your analysis (do not include new ideas or information in conclusions) 6. References 7. Appendix (the visual "map")
